Yesterday, in part one of our chat, we discussed style and Ivan’s role on the Cannondale Pro Cycling team. Today we’re going to have a look back at some of Ivan’s wins and explore his love of the sport.
G4: You have an impressive palmares. What were your favourite victories and why?
IB: My favourite victory is always the next one. I have had a lot of good victories but I’m always dreaming about the next one.
G4: What might be the next one? A third Giro d’Italia?
IB: Yes, I really want to try for a third win, that’s my dream. Cycling is a great sport but it’s never sure beforehand. Anything can happen so I really want to improve my form so as to arrive at the Giro at full gas.
G4: You’re surely due an injury free season after the last two years?
IB: Yes, that would be nice. But it’s part of my job. You know that something can happen at any time and then you have to get over it and restart your season.
Giro Update: Ivan was caught up in yesterday’s multiple pile-up but fortunately was able to remount and chase the leading group. He’s now lying 10th overall at 2:06 back with plenty of action in the mountains remaining. At the finish, he accepted that fortune doesn’t always smile on him.
There’s not many things to say about a day like this. All the peloton was waiting the final climb, I was in the front of the race and suddenly the huge crash happened. Few riders in front of me slid and I was involved. I immediately got up and on my bike to lose as little time as possible. There was a chase to the leading group on the final climb – and it’s never easy to ride your best after a crash. Crashes like this are a part of racing, something that can happen when the pressure in the peloton is high.
G4: Ivan Basso, the consummate professional, leading by example!
