Here’s the second part of our recent chat with Tasmanian Cameron Wurf. In part one we discussed his impressive sporting pedigree and the need for comfortable casual clothes to travel and relax in – G4 of course! Today we find out who Cameron thinks is the most stylish among his team-mates.
G4: How do you typically fill your down time?
CJW: I enjoy writing a blog which I started a few years ago because my Mum would want where I came in the race and why I finished last but had the same time as the winner; all those sorts of questions. So I started writing the blog to a) keep my mum updated and b) so she could let all her friends know what was going on. Over the years more and more people have started to read it but I’ve kept the same approach thinking “What would my Mum want to know?”
If I’ve got a lot of spare time, I like to play golf and then, if I’m home in Australia, I like to go surfing. I pretty much tend to fill in my spare time with those three activities.
Of course, I also like to catch up with friends and, while I enjoy going out for dinner, I much prefer doing some activity with them. I find that sport is a great leveller and I have a much better interaction with people when I’m doing sport with them. It doesn’t matter whether we go surfing together, fishing, riding the bike or going for a jog.
Just this morning I went for a jog with Matej Mohoric and I got to know him so much better in that forty minutes than in the previous two weeks we’ve already been together. All of a sudden we were doing an activity that neither of us was comfortable with and, instantly, we have a bit more mutual respect. I like to find time to do these things while I catch up with my mates.
G4: I enjoyed reading your blog as it gives an insider’s view of the race. It’s the kind of insight you don’t get from the usual news websites.
CJW: It’s a bit of brain fuel too. I went to university but graduated a few years ago so there’s nothing much to sink my teeth into anymore and so it keeps me a little bit intellectual. I try and make it as interesting as possible even though I actually find sport reasonably boring to talk about. I find it much more interesting and exciting to share incidents with which others can relate. That way they can understand a little bit more about what we do and how the sport works.
G4: You said (in part one) you weren’t one of the more stylish members of the team, so who is?
CJW: Probably Moreno Moser, he always looks pretty sharp. I had Peter Sagan with me in Australia for a week and he has some pretty funky outfits. You should see his gold chain. It weighs about half a ton! But, on this team, I definitely think that Moreno’s the most stylish.
G4: Have you shared a room with him?
CJW: Yeah, once.
G4: Did you get any mirror time?
CJW: (Laughs) No he doesn’t need to keep checking himself out. I think he knows he’s a decent looking bloke. He always looks pretty stylish and he’s got a pretty cool hairdo. For me, “au natural” looks are more important and Moreno takes the cake there too, he doesn’t need to try too hard.
G4: So Moreno’s effortlessly chic?
CJW: Yeah, for me his style’s more natural than one put on.
G4: Who do you normally room with?
CJW: It rotates but the person I’ve probably spent the most time with is Ivan Basso and, more recently, its been Damiano Caruso and Elia Viviani.
G4: If I were to ask them about you, would they say you’re a neat and tidy room-mate?
CJW: I hope so. I don’t think I’m messy. Anyway, I always like a degree of order but those three are pretty immaculate, probably more so than me. It’s definitely a required skill as a professional. You need to be as organised as possible and take as few things as possible to a race so that you can easily close your suitcase without needing to jam stuff in to close the lid.
G4: That’s important as you guys often have to share really small rooms?
CJW: That’s it, so you need to be neat and tidy and respect your room-mate. So I think they’d say nice things about me.
