In part one we discussed Alan’s upbringing in an area of Italy where the fans are passionate about cycling. Today we’re going to be talking about what he gets up to in his spare time.
G4: Like all professional riders, you spend a lot of time in casual wear. How are you finding G4’s?
AM: It’s very comfortable and I really like it. I particularly like the slim fitting trousers. I don’t like it when trousers are too baggy. Even the jackets are a nice slim fit. It looks very smart.
G4: You have a number of stylish team-mates. Who’s style do you like the most?
AM: Peter’s style with his big gold chain is more rapper, Moreno is more rock with his strange hair but I think Caruso is the coolest.
G4: We’ve asked a lot of the riders and staff and they’ve all cited Caruso because he’s a “typical Latin lover”. In fact, we were beginning to suspect he’d paid everyone to say that but Paolo assured us he hadn’t! So what do you do in your spare time?
AM: I love listening to music, spending time with my friends – partying when it’s possible. When you’re far from important races, you can go out to dinner and drink something. I like to watch movies and I write about my experiences in cycling. I try to tell my supporters about my experiences in races and the places where I stay. I’ve had plenty of good feedback.
G4: I’m sure, it’s really interesting hearing about a race from the rider’s perspective: all the small details, how, why and when certain things happen.
AM: It’s a good thing when I have such an experience and I’m inspired to write about it. I write while I’m relaxing and I think I write a good story. I don’t have a site because it would make me too busy. It’s less stressful and, because they have lots of readers, I get lots of nice feedback. The last time I had over 8,000 contacts, all Italian. It would be good to put these articles into English.
G4: I’m sure your team-mates who have their own blogs or sites such as George Bennett, Ted King or Cameron Wurf would give you a helping hand. I think they’re helping Matej Mohoric with his diary for one of the cycling magazines.
AM: I need to improve my English but I find it boring doing exercises.
G4: Read, listen and watch things in English that interest you. That’s much the easiest way and, of course, talk English with your team-mates.
AM: When I listen to music that I like, I always look afterwards at the lyrics and try to learn and understand them.
G4: What might you have been if you hadn’t become a cyclist?
AM: I don’t know, it’s not an easy question. Maybe a journalist because I love writing and it was something I really enjoyed doing in school: writing stories.
