G4: Let’s fast forward to the future. You’re a grand-father what would you like to be able to tell your grand-children about your career?
MM: That’s difficult to answer. I suppose I can give them some advice. They should do whatever they want. They shouldn’t feel obligated to do any particular sport. They should just enjoy life when they’re young. Treat sport like a game in the beginning because I think sport helps you to grow to be a team player and to mature. I think it’s really important for children. Sport’s given me a lot so I can share this with them.
G4: When did you start riding and did you play any other sports?
MM: I started riding when I was six years old. At the same time I did figure skating with music and special clothing.
G4: Mmm interesting! I’m assuming the skating helped with your overall balance, spatial awareness on the bike and gave you a taste for spandex. No sequins on your cycling gear though! As a rider you get to visit lots of interesting places. Which has been your favourite?
MM: For me one of the best places has been Canada because I like nature and the big outdoors. I like that it’s quiet and there’s little crime but I’d like to see more of the country. I’ve only visited the French part for races and it’s really beautiful. I like N American style with their big cars and big roads. Everything’s a bit larger than life and in Canada it feels like a mix between Europe and US.
G4: How do you maintain your racing weight?
MM: I don’t do anything special I just watch what I eat. I eat a balanced diet with carbohydrates, protein and lots of vegetables. Of course, you have to have the occasional treat, even during the season, say every 10 days or so…. but only a small portion!
Outside of the season, I can relax more but after 10 years as a pro I’m adapted to this type of lifestyle, so it’s not so difficult for me.
