From the Budapest’s downtown to the Balaton lake, the first 3 stages of the Giro 2020 already announce some greats challenge and huge fight!

The big start of the Giro 2020 will take place in Budapest, Hungary. Every twho year, the departure of the Italian race takes place in another country. After Jerusalem in 2018, It will be in 2020 the pearl of the Danube.

Time trial for the first step in the Hungarian capital, a beautiful flat stage to Györ and a third one along the Balaton Lake .

The G4 team was at the press conference and will describe these first 3 stages of the Giro 2020.

Strategic choices:

The Giro will reserve beautiful surprises with a race that shows the finest assets of Hungary.
The organizing committee of the Giro was looking for a European capital, a big and a beautiful city to host and organize “La Grande Partenza” in 2020.
In addition, tradition and passion for sport were two major points in the committee’s decision.
Cycling becoming increasingly popular in Hungary and the country’s curves are very suitable. Taking part in one of the world’s major cycling events is a proof that local and massive enthusiasm is underway.
Even if organizing a big departure from Giro is a challenge, it’s an opportunity to exhibit in front of the world’s cameras the beauty of Hungary and its capital, Budapest.
“It’s a springboard for Hungarian cycling world, for young people, professional cyclist and teams. ” says Petra Harangi, manager of G4 and present at the press conference .

Budapest, the pearl of the Danube: 9,5km

Giro 2020 will start by time-trial in the city center. An individual battle that will open this Giro. The parcours is relatively flat except the last two km, a up-hill at 4% to reach the castle of the capital. Like the Tour de France in 2007 which start in the streets of London, this against the clock time trial  is a good introduction and the opportunity for the city of Budapest to shine

From the heroes’ square to the castle, the whole city will vibrate to the rhythm of the clock on May 9, 2020.

Second stage from Budapest to Györ: 193km

Györ is the main city in the north-west of the country. It’s a hotspot for Hungarian sports culture, thanks to its women’s handball team, among one of the best in Europe.

The Peloton will leave heroes’ square again for a short and fast climb to Svábvár. Some small hills will ponctuated this  flat stage to Pannonhalma Abbey (km 171), ending with a finish at Györ who will be for the sprinter.

A THIRD STEP TO LAKE BALATON: 197KM

The Balaton’ s Lake will host the third and final Hungarian step of the Giro 2020. Another rather flat parcours which let sprinters decide the podium in Nagykanizsa. The departure will take place in Szekesfehervar. Balaton Lake, a jewels of the old continent is the largest lake in Central Europe. It hosts many sporting and cultural events throughout the year.

It’s an easy big start for cyclist but this 3 stages will show many surprises for that beginning of Giro. It is also a great opportunity for Hungary to highlight its heritage, culture and sports assets.
